Our Journey to Midlife
We have always shared a love of travel that started with mid-90’s backpacking adventures through Southeast Asia and India, before our careers took us to London, Edinburgh and Singapore for several years. During this time, we also had the opportunity to take extended leave, so we planned and enjoyed a 3-month overland adventure from Berlin to Bangkok.
Eventually we returned to Melbourne toting one kid and going on to have another. Things settled for a while until Christmas 2015 when a drunken sibling bet led us to Berlin so Chris could run a marathon! A simple decision to rent bicycles to see the sites got us started on the idea of traveling by bicycle. The boys were now young teens and we thought that this would be a great way to connect with them whilst experiencing more independent backpacking style travels. What followed was a set of increasingly complex, but always independently organised cycling holidays that started with the huge range of rail trails in out native Victoria, to a trip down the Danube and a more rugged journey through the South Island of New Zealand.
Then COVID hit and this, as any Melburnian will tell you led to a LOT of time stuck at home dreaming of being able to leave our house. With gradual relaxation of travel restrictions, we realised that in Australia, our style of bicycle touring is hard, logistically speaking due to the long distances between towns and the idea of mid-life motorcycle touring, (including starting on our ‘L’s’) for us was born…Similar feelings, but with the ability to cover some real miles.
The boys are now young adults and have politely (?) declined to join us on our future cycling trips so we find ourselves as a couple, riding on two wheels into our future (and roping in friends along the way).
