Background and Introduction

This 6–7 night circuit from Melbourne winds through the Victorian High Country and down along the Gippsland coast, revealing a quieter, more rugged side of Victoria — the one most overseas tourists never see beyond the Great Ocean Road.

The trip begins the day after Boxing Day, once the family (and our visiting English guests) have soaked up the Boxing Day Test at the MCG — an unmissable part of any Australian summer, especially when it’s Australia versus England in the Ashes. It’s the perfect way to blend two great traditions: cricket and the open road.

This year’s journey is extra special, with Janette’s sister Suz (Suzanne), her partner Ben, and their son Gibson visiting from England. Together, we’ll share some of Victoria’s most scenic and character-filled roads — from alpine peaks to country pubs and coastal cliffs.

For Janette and myself, it’s also something of a dream realised. Ever since we first got our motorcycle licences, we’ve talked about riding the Great Alpine Road (B500). Now, on our Triumph Tiger 900s, we’ll finally make it happen — chasing sweeping bends, crisp air, and the breathtaking views of Mount Hotham, Dinner Plain, and Omeo.

The trip will wrap up with New Year’s Eve in Kilcunda, where Janette’s mother will join us for a relaxed coastal celebration overlooking the Bass Strait.
